About the Port

Multimodal Connections to the Mid-West and beyond

Strategically located on the Ohio River in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. Our Riverfront Industrial Complex consists of around 900 acres and includes over 8000 contiguous feet of river frontage. Our facility is less than 30 miles from the Pittsburgh International Airport and only 70 river miles from the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers at The Point in downtown Pittsburgh. Our property is conveniently located in close proximity to truck access to West Virginia Highway 2, US Route 22, and Interstate 70.  We are served by our own Empire River Rail and Norfolk Southern Railway, retaining over 20,000 feet of private industry track that includes our multimodal terminal. Our expansive dock area includes 3 barge docks for loading and offloading with large laydown areas and a variety of storage solutions. Whether we need to build-to-suit or we already have what you need, we’re ready to serve you with our road, river, and rail capabilities.

The Port of West Virginia is dedicated to driving economic growth, enhancing regional logistics solutions, and facilitating commerce through efficient, safe, and sustainable terminal operations. We are striving to be a premier inland port, providing tri-modal services that optimize assets, exceed client requirements, and innovatively apply clean energy while maintaining environmental stewardship.

The Follansbee brothers from Pittsburgh purchased 40 acres of farmland to erect a steel mill in 1902 and named the town Follansbee, after themselves. The City of Follansbee became an incorporated city in 1906. Like many of the surrounding areas, it too became a company town with steel and chemicals in production. The mill was in operation until 2012 and was known as Follansbee Steel. Upon closing of the steel mill, the land along the Ohio River became a brownfield site with abandoned mill facilities.

Empire Diversified Energy, Inc. (EDE) purchased the land from Trimodal Terminal L.P. in 2020 and has invested $150 million to date in acquisition, remediation, and engineering to create the port. EDE continues to participate in the West Virginia DEP’s Voluntary Remediation Program (VRP) and is working to fully develop a state-of-the-art trimodal facility. To revitalize the local area, EDE plans to invest more in developing an eco-industrial riverfront complex that will complement the port with ancillary businesses and green energy services.
